Excerpt:
Prologue:
Sometimes a woman’s just had enough. No matter how she may feel about a man. No matter how much she loves him and wants to be with him, there’s always that one, teeny tiny little straw—the last straw. It usually pops up after she’s done all she can humanly possibly do to make things work. She’s cooked for him, cleaned for him, praised him, had sex with him, ignored his annoying ways, and yet, she still finds herself holding the short end of the stick.
As I sat there on the side of Quincy’s bed, the last straw flew in through the bedroom window and landed right on my camel’s back. Quincy, my fiancé and the love of my life, was in the shower whistling. He was whistling like he didn’t have a care in the world. He was whistling like I wasn’t thirty-seven and kicking the hell out of forty. He was whistling like I wasn’t unmarried and childless. Like we hadn’t been engaged for five years. Five years. He was whistling like he hadn’t refused to set a wedding date. Like my biological clock wasn’t ticking as loud as a time bomb.
I’d been with Quincy Wright for eight years. I’d been his lover and friend. I’d bent over backwards, neglected my own needs, and done all I could do to be a good woman. I wanted a husband and I wanted children and he knew it. We’d discussed it at length. And what was his response? His black behind was in the shower whistling. That was it and whether he knew it or not, it was over. O-V-E-R.

FEATURED AUTHOR OF THE WEEK–ADRIENNE THOMPSON

Adrienne Thompson
If you’ve seen me around Social Media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, then you know that it’s no secret that one of my favorite Indie authors is Adrienne Thompson. When Adrienne puts pen to paper you know that she’s going to produce a work of fiction that will touch you in a way that you won’t so easily forget.
Appearing for the second time on my Blog, Adrienne brings us yet another gem, this one titled, Been So Long 3 (Whatever It Takes).
In an online interview, Adrienne Thompson shares her insights and writing advice with writers, readers, and potential readers. So sit back and enjoy as we get to know Adrienne a little better.
What genre do you write and why?
Edgy Inspirational Women’s Fiction.
Tell us about your latest book.
Been So Long 3 is the latest installment in my series about an attractive African American woman who finds herself seemingly perpetually involved in a love triangle with a man from her past and another man from her present. Mona-Lisa is nothing if not unforgettable. She’s sort of an anti-heroine. You don’t know whether to be for or against her, but you’ll enjoy reading about her ups and downs.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have several favorites, but the ones who instantly come to mind are, Terry McMillan, James Patterson, and Bernice McFadden.
What advice do you have for other writers?
Be true to yourself. Be true to your own voice. Embrace your own style. Don’t write to trends because they’ll eventually expire. Be authentically you. Your readers will appreciate it!
What’s your favorite quote about writing/for writers?
“If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can’t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.”
—Elmore Leonard
What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Creating characters and stories and then having people actually see them as real! There is nothing like that!
Who is you favorite character in your book and why?
Mona-Lisa Dandridge, the main character. She’s damaged and broken. She makes bad decisions but she also has to deal with the consequences. She’s a real woman. She’s far from perfect and that’s what I like most about her.
How long did it take you to write your book?
Hmm, about two months, I believe.
What inspires you?
Life, happiness, tragedy, brokenness, healing, and love.
Where can a reader purchase your book?

Adrienne Thompson
Adrienne Thompson is back with her tenth novel.
It’s hard to believe that a little over two years ago, few knew who Adrienne Thompson was. Today, ten novels later, it’s shocking when a reader hasn’t heard of Adrienne. From the release of her first novel, Bluesday (July 2011), until her latest, Your Love Is King (11/12/13), her readership has grown tremendously. If you haven’t read a book by Ms. Thompson, you’re missing a treat.
New Release: Your Love Is King by Adrienne Thompson
Blurb:
Divorced nurse and single mom, Marli Meadows, finds herself stuck in a rut. She’s tired of her life and decides to leave it behind and embark on a search for change. What she finds instead, is love.
Excerpt:
From Chapter One: “You’re Not the Man”
I rolled over in the bed after a short nap, opened my eyes, and nearly jumped out of my skin. For a brief moment, I’d forgotten that Darius was lying next to me. The sight of him lying there asleep with his mouth wide open startled me.
I eyed him with disgust as I tried to ease out of bed undetected. I slid and slid until my feet finally reached the floor, then I tiptoed through the cluttered efficiency apartment into the bathroom. I peered into the smudged mirror and wondered to myself, What are you doing, Marli Meadows? Why are you here with him? I shook my head as if the mere action could erase my relationship with Darius Cotton right out of my life.
I squatted over the toilet and relieved myself, afraid to sit on the seat. Knowing Darius, there was no telling how many other butts had been on that seat. I turned the water in the faucet on to a slow trickle, still not wanting to awaken Darius, and washed my hands. I dried them with some toilet paper and then quickly pulled my underwear and work uniform back on and slowly opened the creaky bathroom door.
I exited the bathroom and found Darius sitting on the side of the bed, lighting up a blunt. Dang! I thought, if I don’t get out of here quick, I’ll be smelling just like that stuff and probably get a contact high. It’d be my luck for them to pop up with a random drug test at work and that crap’ll show up.
“You leaving, baby?” he grunted between drags. He rubbed his hand across his bare chest and stretched. I eyed his nakedness as I walked back into the room.
“Yeah, it’s already eleven. I gotta go home and get some rest for work tonight,” I answered as I gathered up my purse and slipped on my shoes.
With a lopsided grin on his face, he revealed two rows of shiny gold teeth and said, “Yeah, cause you know if you stay here you gon’ have to put in some more work, huh?”
Ugh, I thought. “Yeah, well, I’ll talk to you later, Darius.”
“A’ight, come give me a kiss, boo.”
I swallowed hard. I know this sounds strange considering the fact that I’d just had sex with him, but the thought of kissing him really didn’t appeal to me. It took all I had in me to walk over to him, bend over, and plant a kiss on his dark lips.
He swatted my butt. “A’ight girl, I’ll holla at you later. Don’t work too hard tonight.”
I nodded. “I won’t. Bye, Darius.”
“Bye, Mar-lay.”
I shook my head as I closed the door behind me. We’d been “seeing” each other for nearly two years, and he still mispronounced my name. Well, it was either that or he was just so country that it sounded like he was mispronouncing it. Whichever was the case, it was irritating.
I walked down the steep stairs from Darius’s apartment out onto the parking lot. I unlocked and then climbed into my Toyota Camry which was parked right next to Darius’s souped-up Chevy Caprice. I rolled my eyes at the repeated Louis Vuitton logos covering his car. I backed out of my space and glanced at his license plate which read, SMOKONE. I sighed as I pulled off the lot.
